After
that Matt developed a successful arranging and
conducting career that lead him to work with pop/rock
acts such as The Pet Shop Boys, Massive Attack,
U2, Catatonia, Mealnie C, Badly Drawn Boy, Elliott
Smith, Dido and Tom Jones, as well as classical
crossover acts including Russell Watson, Vanessa
Mae, Amici, Bond and Maxsim.
Through his arranging work Matt met the Scottish
composer Craig Armstrong, who asked him to help
orchestrate his early movie scores – having
just made his breakthrough with the Baz Luhrmann
movie Romeo & Juliet. They have now worked
together on 15 movies including Moulin Rouge,
Love Actually, Ray and World Trade Center, the
scores picking up numerous awards along the way
including a Golden Globe, 2 Baftas and 2 Ivor
Novellos. “Craig is an amazing talent –
whether he’s writing for film, the concert
hall or his solo albums – he always brings
something fresh and new to a project and working
with him over the last 10 years has been artistically
fascinating and stimulating. We’ve had a
blast along the way too!”
Matt has also orchestrated and conducted for
the superstar Indian composer A.R.Rahman on 6
movies, the hugely talented Finnish composer Tuomas
Kantelinen on 6 movies, as well as working for
such Hollywood names as John Murphy and Hans Zimmer.
He continues to orchestrate and conduct for some
of the most exciting and high profile movies being
made today.
As a composer Matt started out in TV –
scoring a number of network series for ITV and
the BBC including I Saw You, Rescue Me, Safe as
Houses and Number 13. In 2005 he was asked to
score his first film – a new Anglo-French
movie, The Four Musketeers (aka D’Artagnan
and the 3 Musketeers), directed by Pierre Aknine
and starring Emmanuelle Béart. Running
at 3 hours long – and with over 2 hours
of music written for an 80 piece orchestra and
40 piece choir – this was a major undertaking.
“From the very start I loved this project.
Pierre (Aknine) was so supportive of my work,
and to get a chance at scoring this 17th Century
epic was such a joy”.
In 2006 Matt composed the score to the Anglo-Belgian
action thriller Storm Force (aka Windkracht 10)
directed by Hans Herbots. This - the most expensive
Flemish movie ever made – opened the Ghent
International Film Festival and went on to top
the Belgian box office. “Another great experience
– scoring this was a very different vibe
from my first film, but I loved fusing contemporary
beats with action-style orchestral writing. Hans
(Herbots) really wanted something new and pushed
me to be more daring and innovative with my writing.
I also got to record it at my favourite London
studio – Air Lyndhurst– and have it
recorded and mixed by the genius that is Geoff
Foster”.
As a record producer/arranger Matt is currently
developing several crossover acts for the major
labels with the manager and broadcaster Jasmine
Lowson.
As a session conductor and concert MD, Matt has
conducted many leading orchestras and ensembles
including The London Sinfonietta, The Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra, The Royal Scottish National Orchestra,
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The
Chamber Orchestra of London, The London Metropolitan
Orchestra, The London Session Orchestra, The Seattle
Symphony Orchestra, The Hollywood Film Chorale,
The Orchestre de Colonne (Paris), The City of
Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Czech Symphony
Orchestra, Metro Voices, The Millennia Ensemble,
The Czech Philharmonic Choir and The Mons Orchestra
(Brussels).
